The XV Pan American Games Rio 2007, July 13-29, 2007, is expected to gather 5.648 athletes, from 42 countries from the Americas . Soon afterwards, from 12 to 19 August, about 1,300 paralympic athletes will be competing in the Para Pan American Games. The Organizing Committee of the Pan American Games Rio 2007 (CO-RIO) is responsible for accomplishing both events, thereby guaranteeing an equal quality level, since one single organization team will be working and because the same facilities will be used.

CO-RIO is in charge of planning, organizing, and operating both the Pan American Games and the Para Pan American Games, in addition to the preliminary event-tests. CO-RIO is a non-profit, non-governmental entity, formed by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) and by the Brazilian Olympic Confederations, relying on the participation of representatives from the Rio de Janeiro City Government, from the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and from the Federal Government.

Structured as a non-profit association, CO-RIO is a self-governing organization that enters agreements with both government agencies and private entities. CO-RIO's balance sheet is openly published and is audited by independent auditors, besides the public finance court of the three levels of government (city, state, and federal).
